Puerto Viejo

Playa Puerto Viejo in Guanacaste is located in the Cabo Velas district of Santa Cruz, sitting directly north of the famous white-shell shores of Playa Conchal. Playa Puerto Viejo is a peaceful 500-meter beach known for its turquoise waters, soft white sand, and relaxed atmosphere. Despite sharing its name, it should not be confused with the famous Caribbean destination of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on Costa Rica’s east coast.

This quiet beach is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and simply enjoying a less crowded stretch of coastline. Crystal-clear waters, gentle waves, and the shade of mature beachfront trees create a perfect setting for families and visitors seeking a more authentic Costa Rican beach experience. One of its greatest advantages is its direct access to the stunning white-shell sands of nearby Playa Conchal, which can easily be reached on foot.

Access to Playa Puerto Viejo is straightforward, with a mostly paved road leading toward the coast, followed by a short gravel section that is manageable for most vehicles when driven carefully, although high-clearance vehicles are more comfortable. Visitors will find a beachfront bar and restaurant as well as a few local vendors, while the nearby communities of Brasilito and Matapalo offer supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, and accommodations ranging from budget-friendly hostels to boutique hotels.
