Playa Azucar

Playa Pan de Azúcar, also known as Sugar Beach, is a secluded and unspoiled cove located in the Guanacaste province, just south of the pedestrian-friendly town of Las Catalinas. This peaceful beach is known for its unique mix of dark volcanic and light-colored sand, crystal-clear waters, and abundant wildlife, including howler monkeys, black iguanas, and colorful magpie jays.

The calm, protected bay makes Playa Pan de Azúcar an excellent destination for swimming and snorkeling. At low tide, visitors can explore the rocky tide pools along the southern end of the beach, where marine life is easily observed. Nature lovers will also enjoy the scenic coastal trail that links Playa Pan de Azúcar with Playa Prieta and Punta Potrero, offering approximately 11 kilometers of hiking through tropical dry forest with spectacular ocean views and unforgettable sunsets.

Although the beach is best known for its tranquil waters, experienced surfers can occasionally find quality waves near the rocky points when the swell and tides align, making it a worthwhile stop for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a less crowded break.
